Suicide Help

There is no typical suicide victim. Almost everyone at some time in his or her life thinks about committing suicide. It happens to young and old, rich and poor. People having a crisis often perceive their dilemma as inescapable and feel an utter loss of control. Fortunately, there are some common warning signs which, when identified and acted upon, can save your life or the life of someone you know.

Be Observant

  • Pay attention to your suspicions.
  • Trust your judgement.

  • Ask others what they have noticed.
  • Reach out to the Person
  • Show you care.
  • Hear what they are saying.
  • Tell them what you have noticed.

  • Ask directly about suicidal intentions.
  • Show Respect
  • Be as understanding as possible.
  • Be honest and genuine.
  • Take the situation seriously.
  • Be Actively Involved
  • Talk openly and freely.
  • Ask direct questions.
  • Determine Risk
  • Ask about previous attempts and ideations.
  • Ask for the details of the suicidal plan.
  • Offer Support
  • Let them talk.
  • Focus specifically on doing something about sucide.
  • Offer realistic hope.
  • Identify other supports such as parents, friends, counsellors, family, crisis lines.
  • Get Help
  • Urge the person to get help.
  • Be firm about your intentions to get help for them if they wont.
  • Avoid secrecy pacts.
  • Don't leave if the risk of suicide is high.
